Spirited conversation can add a lot of spark to a first date but if you go too far and enter argument territory, you run the risk of coming across as overly aggressive or a bit too competitive. Despite your best efforts of wanting to seem interesting, intellectual or engaged, it is important to keep conversation light-hearted and ammunition-free in the getting to know you phase. This doesn’t mean that you can’t state your opinions, as different as they may be from your date’s – you can, and should (!), but entering into a fiery debate that scares away the waiter might not secure your position for a second date… far better to casually express opinion and offer a dose of humor to ensure the mood stays light.
