Listen up!

not listening

I know, you’ve heard it a zillion times before, from your mama, from your teachers, from everyone, “being a good listener is a key to healthy relationships.” Well it is true. But those wise ones may have left out that you have to apply good listening skills from even the first, “Hello!” See here’s the thing. People are drawn to good listeners. People who don’t listen appear bored or self-centered… and bored or self-centered people don’t get dates. So how do you effectively listen? Well, it is more than just having your ears open. It is about showing that you are hearing someone. So when you are getting to know someone, repeat back what you are hearing, ask questions, offer feedback and absolutely engage your body in the conversation with good eye contact, leaning in and not letting yourself get distracted by external forces. Hear me??
